The Bible tells us that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV).
I take the view of the inerrancy of scripture, although that is not what I will discuss here.
You can do some research for yourself on these things I’m going to mention rather than take my word for it.
In our generation, more and more historical accounts of Jesus are being discovered. Take a look at the Megiddo Mosaic, the Caiaphas ossuary, and the findings from the Garden and tomb of Jesus. With a quick search, you can find a lot of information, including early historical writers of Jesus' life. There are many historians, including atheist scholars, who verify a historical Jesus.
The reality is that not many people question whether or not Jesus was a person who lived among us or whether he was real. You will be able to verify that fact; it’s only the passing of time that has forced some to ask that particular question. I will leave this with you to dive into should you wish.
There is a much more critical question about Jesus that has the most serious ramifications, for your life, and mine.
This simple yet most magnificent question is one of my favourite verses in the Bible.
In Matthew 16:15 the Lord Jesus Christ asks his dear disciples,
"But whom say ye that I am?” (King James Version).
“But who do you yourselves say that I am?” (New American Standard Version)
Whether you know it or not, or agree or not, the truthful answer to this question not only determines your WHOLE life, but it does so even though you know this question exists or not. Now, if what you have just read is true, surely it must be worth acknowledging the question, in the very least.
Now there are many things, and people, in life we don’t know, and the reality of them does not matter whatsoever to our life. And then there are some things that when we come to know, it changes everything in our lives. Take, for example, your spouse; at some point, you didn’t know them or even knew that they existed. But once you knew them and got to know them more, and married them, it changed your life completely. And if you have children, you can obviously apply this again. So, you can see from this example, some things or people that we don't know, but come to know, change everything.
So let me say, being that God is absolutely irrecovably and imperatively true, do you think it is of value to know the truth of His Word? I’ll answer yes for you.
When we look at all Jesus’ words only, in the Gospel accounts, putting all words into major categories such as love, the Kingdom of Heaven/God, eternal life/salvation, and His identity etc- what do you think He spoke of most?
What if I told you that when we look at the scriptures, the Lord Jesus spoke about the answer to this magnificent question, "But whom say ye that I am?” more than anything else? That’s right, the Lord Jesus spoke about His identity more than anything else; in fact 31% of what He spoke was about who He was, around 9000 of the words in red.
Going back to the original verse at the top regarding some of the purposes of scripture, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV, I have always taken the view that if God himself said one thing and one thing only, it is worth listening to. But how much more if he spoke about something over and over again? It’s almost like He knew the question that would be asked of Him, not only then during His human life, death, resurrection and ascension but for us two thousand years later. I say that tongue in cheek, of course, it’s almost like He knew. I mean, He is the Lord God Almighty, He is omniscient, knowing all things. He knows exactly in this moment what you will be thinking when reading this about your loving Saviour.
I am not going to recite here all that Jesus says about Himself. I want to encourage you to read His word for yourself and learn what He says about Himself.
The Apostle Paul, writing to his dearest friend Timothy, says ”And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” 2 Timothy 3:15).
My prayer is that through the reading of the scriptures, spiritually, you come into the presence of the Most Holy Lord God Almighty.
If you do not know Him as a loving Saviour, please read the Gospel accounts and follow up with the epistles. Start in the Gospel of John, my favourite book in the Bible, then go to Matthew and read through the New Testament, and then continue to Genesis and read through.
Here are a few scriptures others have said about the Lord Jesus:
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. (John 1:12)
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
(Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.) Titus 2:11-12)
